New Hitachi X-MET8000 Smart handheld XRF analyzer

New Hitachi X-MET8000 Smart handheld XRF analyzer

Over 400 million tonnes of scrap are processed each year. Sorting scrap metal through testing adds value at all stages of the metal recycling process, from sorting mixed scrap into low value and high value materials, to determining the composition of the scrap that goes into the melts and the quality of the output. Our X-MET analyzers are used worldwide in the scrap metal processing and recycling market to add value at every stage of the metal recycling process.

Handheld XRF for mining
The X-MET8000 handheld XRF (HHXRF) analyzer delivers rapid, on-site geochemical analysis at various stages of the mining process, from the early stages of exploration through to environmental monitoring after site closure. This reduces the need for laboratory analyzes significantly, speeds the decision-making process and reduces testing costs. Why choose the X-MET8000 Geo?

Superior performance: our revolutionary BOOST™ technology and large area silicon-drift detector provide up to 10 times the sensitivity of other HHXRF models, delivering the low limits of detection needed to measure pathfinders or penalty elements.
Fast analysis: measure up to 40 elements in seconds; complete testing programs quickly.
Rugged for low cost of ownership and minimum downtime.
Outstanding stability: results you can trust, day after day, whatever the weather.
Easy to use: minimum user training required.
Embedded GPS: combine geolocation coordinates with test results for flawless site mapping.
Powerful data management: print results as you go on a Bluetooth printer and attach them to sample bags to avoid mix-ups; export them to a USB device or use our app and cloud service to manage results in real-time, wherever you are.

Handheld XRF for soil
The contamination of soil has gradually been caused by human activity such as industrial processes (e.g. mining, manufacturing), agriculture (use of fertilizers and pesticides), or waste disposal (e.g. improper use of landfill).

Exposure to some of the contaminants such as Pb and Cd is detrimental to human health, and many countries have introduced regulations and programs to identify polluted areas and manage the clean-up process (remediation).

For example, as part of a US waste management program, the U.S EPA introduced Method 6200 for the in-situ determination of key elements in soil and sediment by field portable/handheld X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry.

Operators can use HHXRF for the rapid, on-site screening of soil for heavy metals and other pollutants. This enables them to dramatically reduce the number of samples sent to an off-site laboratory for analysis, and reduces analysis costs and the time it takes to complete the testing program. By isolating problem areas and defining remediation boundaries on the spot, operators can minimize soil treatment and disposal costs.

Why choose an X-MET8000 Expert Geo?

Superior performance: meet today and tomorrow’s testing requirements with our revolutionary BOOST™ technology and large area silicon-drift detector. They provide up to 10 times the sensitivity of other HHXRF models, delivering the low limits of detection needed to measure critical elements (e.g. US EPA Method 6200 RCRA and priority elements) in soil, sludge and sediments
Fast analysis: complete surveys quickly
Outstanding stability: results you can trust, day after day, whatever the weather.
Rugged for low cost of ownership and minimum downtime
Easy to use: minimum user training required
Embedded GPS: combine geolocation coordinates with test results for flawless site mapping
Powerful data management: print results as you go on a Bluetooth printer and attach them to sample bags to avoid mix-ups; export them to a USB device or use our app and cloud service to manage results in real-time, wherever you are.

Handheld XRF for regulatory compliance
Whether you are a manufacturer, retailer, or importer of electronic equipment, children’s products and other consumer goods, you will have been affected by the regulations regarding the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS), as well as other directives (e.g. CPSIA – Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act – of 2008, Packaging directive, WEEE – Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment, CA Prop 65 etc). These directives have been enacted in different geographic regions to increase product safety, and to reduce environmental pollutants by controlling “upstream” sources in products and disposal techniques. This legislation affects a wide variety of industries worldwide, from raw materials suppliers, to components and finished products manufacturers and retailers.

Regulatory compliance screening by X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) provides information about the chemical content of the components being tested. Because it is fast and non-destructive, XRF is widely used and it is supported by standard test procedures such as IEC Method 62321.

Why choose the X-MET8000 Expert CG?

Fully portable: compact and light, the X-MET can be taken to where the analysis is needed (e.g. at incoming inspection, in the warehouse, from factory to factory)
Rapid and accurate screening of a wide variety of material (e.g. polymers, alloys)
Fast: make accept/reject decisions on the spot
Easy to use: minimum user training required
Optional small-spot collimator (3mm diameter): test small features accurately by isolating them from surrounding material
Integrated camera: see what you test clearly
Powerful data management: store results on-board the analyzer, export reports to a USB flash drive, or manage your data in real-time using our app and cloud service

Handheld XRF for coating thickness
Metal coatings are used in many industries and are applied to objects for decorative purposes (e.g. mirror finish, gold colour), to increase corrosion resistance, improve solderability, increase hardness, reduce friction and wear, and more.

To ensure that the thickness of the coating applied is sufficient to give parts and components the desired properties, without wasting material by applying too thick a layer, plating companies need to control their process and check the end products meet specifications.

Coating thickness measurement based on X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is a widely accepted and industry-proven analytical technique. Handheld XRF offers total versatility: you can take the analyzer to where testing is needed.

Why choose the X-MET8000?

Simple operation: the X-MET’s intuitive user interface provides “point and shoot” analysis; minimal user training required
Fast and non-destructive analysis: make process change decisions fast; no scratch or other damage on the tested parts; no waste
Versatile: analyze coated and uncoated parts as well as plating solutions
Ideal for the testing of heavy and bulky items
Robust: IP54 rated (sealed against dust and splash water), and tested to MIL-STD 810G for ruggedness, the X-MET is designed to work in harsh environments

Handheld XRF for archaeometry
Handheld X-ray Fluorescence (HHXRF) is often used in the process for authentication, conservation and restoration of art and historical artefacts. It is a non-invasive technique that can help identify inks, pigments, ceramics, bronzes and other alloys in seconds, without the need for sampling or preparing the tested piece. The analysis can indicate the date and/or provenance of an object or piece, for example by identifying specific pigments in a porcelain glaze that would only have been used during a particular time period. Handheld XRF analysis can also help ascertain if, and which part of, an object has been restored, by checking the elemental composition over the surface of the object, and easily pin-pointing differences.
